IUCN Asia Regional Conservation Forum convenes in Thailand to ‘reimagine conservation’

The 8th IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Asia Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) opened today in Bangkok, Thailand, bringing together almost 600 conservation leaders from across the region, including representatives from governments, non-governmental organisations, donors and partners, academia, and the private sector, among others. Running for three days under the theme ‘Reimagining Conservation in Asia: A Nature Positive Future,’ the Forum aims to assess conservation progress, revisit priority goals, and propose strategic directions to effectively address environmental and biodiversity challenges over the next 20 years.
“The Regional Conservation Forum is a unique opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to collaborate for the benefit of nature and humanity. Let us seize the moment to enhance our partnerships and accelerate efforts towards a nature-positive future for Asia,” said Mr Thalearngsak Petchsuwan, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), Government of Thailand. MONRE is co-host of the 8th IUCN Asia RCF.
“As we come together in this Forum, I encourage all of us to continue fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and exploring new solutions that will enable us to protect the natural world more effectively. Together, we can ensure that the rich biodiversity of our planet is preserved for future generations,” said Athapol Charoenshunsa, Director General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation (DNP), Government of Thailand. DNP has represented the State of Thailand as an IUCN Member since 1962.
The RCF is a quadrennial statutory event that serves as a precursor to the next IUCN World Conservation Congress, which will take place in October 2025 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The Forum convenes IUCN Constituents and other stakeholders to discuss and agree on Asia’s priority conservation agenda, to be shared at the global Membership meeting the following year.
The 8th IUCN Asia RCF is co-organised with the National Committee of IUCN Members in Thailand. This year’s RCF offers IUCN Constituents the unique opportunity to provide feedback on both the IUCN 20-year Strategic Vision for the Union, as well as the IUCN Programme for 2026-2029. The RCF will kickstart a year-long process for Members to submit motions on key conservation priorities, which will be debated and adopted as Resolutions and Recommendations at the 2025 IUCN Congress.
This RCF features the inaugural Youth Leaders Forum, organised for and by youth from 23 countries to highlight the importance of young professionals and their increasing roles and contributions to nature conservation.

The priorities, experience and perspectives of key stakeholders in Asia will help inform the global agenda, ensuring that IUCN’s resolutions are grounded in reality and tailored to the needs of our diverse world,” said IUCN Director General Dr Grethel Aguilar.
IUCN Asia is honoured to welcome Toyota Motor Asia (Thailand) Co., Ltd. as Forum Partner, building on a longstanding partnership in business for biodiversity since 2016.

Aside from high-level discussions on regional challenges by various stakeholders, the 8th IUCN Asia RCF will feature eight thematic sessions on new and existing programme priorities, as well as 17 side events organised by IUCN Members, Commissions and partners. The venue also provides exhibition booths to showcase conservation work.
During the three-day event, a dedicated Learning Zone will offer a series of knowledge sharing and mini-training sessions organised by the IUCN Academy. Participants will also have the chance to view posters and exhibitions, featuring various collaborative efforts for nature and biodiversity conservation.
