The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL), in collaboration with Kayfoun Municipality and Hima Charter Villages in Mount Lebanon, proudly hosted the grand opening of the Plant Nursery in Kayfoun under the patronage of Minister of Agriculture Dr. Nizar Hani and in the esteemed presence of Mr. Cyril Dewaleyne, Deputy Head of the EU Cooperation in Lebanon.

The event marked a significant milestone in Lebanon’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community-driven conservation efforts. The newly inaugurated nursery is set to play a pivotal role in restoring native plant species, supporting local conservation projects, and promoting sustainable land management in the Mount Lebanon region.

Event Highlights
The inauguration, held at the Mount Lebanon Hima Center in Kayfoun, brought together government officials, environmental organizations, and local stakeholders. The opening session featured key addresses from:

SPNL (BirdLife Lebanon) Director, Mr. Assad Serhal, who highlighted the significance of the Hima conservation model and the role of the plant nursery in biodiversity restoration.

Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Nizar Hani, who reaffirmed the government’s support for sustainable environmental initiatives and the importance of local engagement.

EU Representative, Mr. Cyril Dewaleyne, who reiterated the EU’s dedication to conservation efforts in Lebanon and emphasized the role of international collaboration.

The event also included two insightful presentations on the importance of native plant restoration and the ecological impact of the nursery, followed by an engaging discussion session with attendees.

A Step Toward a Greener Future
The Kayfoun Plant Nursery is expected to provide essential resources for reforestation projects, habitat restoration, and climate resilience efforts across Lebanon. By fostering community-based conservation and promoting the traditional Hima approach, the initiative aims to safeguard Lebanon’s rich biodiversity for future generations.

SPNL extends its gratitude to all partners, stakeholders, and attendees who contributed to making this event a success. The organization remains committed to enhancing environmental conservation efforts and strengthening community participation in sustainable natural resource management.

Features of the Kayfoun Plant Nursery
Strategically located at the Mount Lebanon Hima Center in Kayfoun, the nursery is equipped with a state-of-the-art greenhouse and essential facilities designed for the cultivation of native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers. By focusing on indigenous plant species, the nursery aims to restore local habitats, enhance biodiversity, and support reforestation efforts across Lebanon.

Community Engagement and Sustainability
Central to the BioConnect Project is the empowerment of local communities through the traditional Hima conservation approach. The Kayfoun Plant Nursery serves as a living example of this philosophy, involving local residents in conservation activities, providing educational opportunities, and promoting sustainable land-use practices. This community-driven model ensures that conservation efforts are both culturally relevant and ecologically effective.

A Collaborative Effort
The success of the Kayfoun Plant Nursery is the result of collaborative efforts among various stakeholders, including local municipalities, environmental organizations, and international partners. The European Union’s funding through the BioConnect Project has been instrumental in bringing this initiative to fruition, demonstrating the power of international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges.

Looking Ahead
The inauguration of the Kayfoun Plant Nursery marks a significant milestone in Lebanon’s journey toward environmental sustainability. It stands as a testament to the potential of community-driven conservation efforts supported by international partnerships. SPNL remains committed to expanding such initiatives, fostering a harmonious relationship between nature and people, and ensuring the preservation of Lebanon’s rich natural heritage for future generations.
